Frequently Asked Questions about Counselling Supports
I know your time is valuable, so I thought I'd address some of the most common questions I receive from clients. Hopefully, these answers will resonate with you.
What qualifications do you have, and what about your clinical experience?
I initially trained as a Counsellor, completing a Diploma of Applied Science (Counselling) about 24 years ago. Since then, I have pursued further education, earning an undergraduate and Master's degree in Social Work. My specialized qualifications include a Diploma in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Art Therapy, and Eating Disorders. Additionally, I have completed a Diploma in Family Therapy, as well as Certificates in Expressive Therapies—Sandplay, Symbol Work, and working with Children and Adolescents. I’ve also trained in Transactional Analysis, Life Coaching (specializing in Life Cycle coaching and Health and Wellness), and more recently, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), along with Emotional Freedom Technique (Level 1–3).
My clinical experience spans over 24 years in both community and clinical settings. This includes work in Family Services, Primary and Secondary Schools, Addictions/Substance Abuse (both inpatient withdrawal and post-withdrawal support), hospital settings, Palliative Care, Clinical and Community Mental Health, and sexual assault crisis response.
Are you registered to provide services under Medicare?
Yes, I am registered to provide psychological services to individuals with a current mental health care plan, which is funded under the ‘Better Access—Better Outcomes to Mental Health Program.’ If you have a valid mental health care plan, you can receive a Medicare rebate of approximately $83.00 for eligible services.
I believe therapy works when…
What can I expect from you when we meet for the first time?
I understand that attending counselling for the first time can feel overwhelming, full of anxiety and uncertainty. When we first speak, I hope you'll get a sense of who I am. Creating a warm, comfortable, and calming environment is my top priority. I strongly encourage you to voice any concerns or worries you have so we can address them right away.
How long will we work together?
Some clients come for a brief period (around 3-6 sessions), while others may require around 10 sessions. I’ve observed that many clients seek re-engagement as new challenges or issues arise in their lives. I believe counselling is often "episodic"—people come when they need support. You’ll find comfort in knowing that I remember your story, so you won’t need to explain your past or family history each time you return. (In fact, I often remember small details, like your pets’ names, which can surprise you!)
Do you write court reports?
In general, I do not write court reports. My expertise lies in therapeutic work rather than in preparing lengthy reports, especially in family court cases. I deeply respect the confidentiality of my clients and feel that court proceedings can disrupt the therapeutic relationship. There are other organizations that specialize in court-related services, and I am happy to provide referrals if needed. However, I do work with victims of crime and can write VOCAT reports when necessary.
Do you offer after-hours or weekend appointments?
Yes, I offer some flexibility with appointment times, including video sessions via Zoom. This makes it easier to accommodate your schedule, even if you need an appointment outside of traditional hours.
Do you practice at multiple locations?
No, I work from a purpose-built studio in the Dandenong Ranges and offer Zoom sessions for telehealth.
Can expressive therapies (Sandplay and Symbol Work) be used with adults?
Absolutely! In fact, I’ve found that introducing these modalities to adults significantly enhances the therapeutic process. In my experience, some truly transformative shifts occur when clients engage in these creative therapies. It’s often a powerful tool for growth and healing.
