Frequently Asked Questions

Any questions? these are the ones i often get asked

What is the difference between a psychologist and you being an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker? Im confused.

Psychologists are trained to understand how we feel, think, and respond to life, especially during times of stress, overwhelm, or change. They complete extensive training and are registered in Australia to support a wide range of mental health and emotional experiences.

In Australia, psychologists are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia

They are equipped to support people through a wide range of experiences from stress, anxiety, and life transitions to more complex emotional or mental health concerns.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are trained therapists recognised by Medicare, with a strong understanding of how life experiences, relationships, and environment shape and influence well-being. Accredited Mental Health Social workers have obtained specialised training to support the mental health needs of the people they work with and are accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). Social Workers tend to bring both clinical skill and a broader understanding of the social and relational contexts people live within.

Their work often integrates practical support with therapeutic approaches to help people navigate life more steadily and meaningfully. Their work often holds both the emotional and practical layers to support people at times of change.

Do I need a referral to see you?

No, you can reach out anytime and book directly. However if you’d like to access Medicare rebates (which is approximately $87 per session), which is capped at 10 sessions per calendar year, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. If you are seeking a mental health care plan, Dr's generally appreciate a double appointment to be booked, to allow sufficient time to complete the required paperwork.

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions are $185 per 60 minute session. For clients who prefer 90 minute sessions, the fees are $250.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are generally 50-60 minutes. However some people prefer longer sessions, which can be arranged if needed.

I'm new to all of this, what happens in the first session?

Firstly you don’t need to have it all figured out. Many people arrive feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or even a little guarded and that’s okay and totally normal. We begin slowly and always at your pace. I give you a tour of the studio, always offer you a warm drink or a water. I'll check your preferences regarding any essential oils (that are often quietly diffusing), background relaxing music in the room, and your comfort in terms of heating and cooling in the room (you have full control over the split system remote). We’ll explore what’s been weighing on you, what you might be longing for, and what safety looks like for you. You’re always in control of how much you share. For many sensitive or neurodiverse people, being truly met can feel a little foreign at first. There’s no rush, we build that sense of safety over time.

How many sessions will I need?

There’s really no set number. Some people come for short-term support. Others choose longer-term therapy, especially when working with trauma, sensitivity, or long-standing patterns.

We go at a pace that honours your nervous system by not rushing change, but supporting it to unfold safely. Sometimes you may seek to address one specific challenge you have and that is what we work on and nothing more (alikened to a chapter of healing). Generally most clients, re-access sessions with me 'on a needs basis', over the course of their lives, as different events play out through the life cycles. I have an 'open door policy' where clients are welcome to revisit as they need. Clients generally appreciate that I can remember the content of our sessions, and that they don't have to be burdened by re-explaining their histories all over again.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for rebates for up to 10 sessions per year.

Can I use private health insurance?

Some sessions may be claimable depending on your cover. It’s best to check directly with your provider.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. What you share is held in confidence. However there are a few legal limits (such as risk of harm to self or others or court requirements), and I'm always transparent about the limitations of confidentiality.

Where are you located?

Sessions are available in-person in my purpose built studio in Melbournes picturesque Dandenong Ranges- The Patch, as well as online or by phone. Remember, you can choose what feels most appropriate and comfortable for you. Some clients will elect to switch a face to face session to a phone or zoom, if they are having a day where their energetic and emotional conserves are minimal, or where they are just not up to venturing out.

What appointment times are available?

Weekday appointments are generally available, with some limited after-hours appointments available in specific circumstances.

Are you a registered NDIS provider?

No. However, if you’re self- or plan-managed, you may still be able to access sessions. So feel free to reach out or speak to your NDIS support coordinator.

You might also be wondering…

What if I feel “too much” or become easily overwhelmed an in tears?

You’re not too much and if you feel emotions arise, we let them take up space. There are tissue boxes always within easy reach. If we need a break to walk around outside, we can do that too. There are no security doors, swipe cards to get in or out of the studio. Many clients here are highly sensitive or empathic. Feeling deeply is not something I pathologise, rather it’s something we learn to understand, support, and work with safely.

What if I struggle to put things into words?

That’s okay. We can go gently, using reflection, sensation, or whatever way of communicating feels most natural to you. Words aren’t the only way healing happens. There is a tonne of symbols and cards, to express what longs to be communicated, when words don't always exist.

What if I’ve had therapy before and it didn’t help?

That can happen, especially if you didn’t feel truly seen or understood.Research continually confirms that the therapeutic relationship matters significantly in terms of clients reported positive changes to well-being. Feeling safe, paced, and not overwhelmed is essential, especially for trauma and neurodivergent nervous systems.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. For many sensitive or neurodiverse clients, being in their own space can feel more emotionally and energetically regulated and comfortable.

What if I need to cancel?

Life happens. I just ask for as much notice as possible, to prevent cancellation fees being applied. My cancellation policy will be shared when you book. You will receive email and/or sms reminders to ensure that you are reminded of appointments, and know how to cancel or reschedule if needed.

Is therapy only for when things feel really bad?

Not at all. Many people come because something doesn’t feel quite right, patterns in relationships, emotional exhaustion, feeling disconnected from themselves.

Therapy can be a place to come home to yourself, not just when things become overwhelming.
